Summer & Amazing

Here I am . . . sitting in my hotel room in Washington, D.C. overlooking the Potamac river with the Washington Monument off in the distance. The lights last night were beautiful, the sunrise that awakened me even moreso. I am a blessed lady!!

Today Sekoe will move out of the dorm and put all that stuff in the van. . . sound familiar? We'll make the 8.5 hour trip back to Kentucky . . . and then for us . . .

SUMMER BEGINS!

Lots of the schedule for all of us but it will be SUMMER! I work through the summer with July being my busiest month at KDE. But, it is a wonderful time. I wish you a wonderful, relaxing time filled with family, summer picnics, friends, lots of laughter and time to rest your brain :)!!

Thanks for making this blog such an informative, entertaining at times and beneficial sight for your peers, yourself and me.

Be Blessed!

Bluegrass technology Center

I didn't get a chance to go the Bluegrass Technology Center, but I feel that I really missed out on an wonderful experience. Do you think that I could schedule any time to see it around the summer?

Thanks,
Carolyn

Final thoughts!!!

Well, I finished a couple of my finals today and I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with being finished this semester. I really enjoyed your class Mrs. White I feel like I actually learned how to relate the material that we went over to real life situations. Also, you're a great teacher who will challenge her student to succeed in the course. I wish more of my teacher were like you than the typical teacher who comes to work and doesn't' care if the students understand the material. I know a lot of you guys know what i am talking about..ha ha! Well, I hope everyone has a good summer!

-Carolyn
What a relief!!! I finally finished the final. I need to know why I go completely blank when I am put under pressure. It is not that this test was any harder than the rest, but because it was the final and because I read the email that Mrs. White sent that said the first test she graded had a perfect score I just went blank. I have been working on this test since Sunday and I just could not get it done. I was totally stressing and freaking out!!!!!!!!!! I am still worried, but, boy am I relieved!

Thanks again to Mrs. White for a wonderful semester. You were so understanding and considerate. I wish all my professors could be as good as you!!! Good luck to all on remaining finals and things to come. Hope to meet up with some of you again in classes in the future. Have a great summer everyone!!!!!!!!!!

Sigh of Relief

I can feel the weight of the world lifting off my shoulders as the semester comes to a close. Enjoyed every minute of class and meeting everyone. Thanks Mrs. White for a great class and for everything you did to help each of us. I just wish I had more teachers/professors like you. :) I really do appreciate it!!! Again, I hope everyone done great on the final and for the class. Hope you all have an awesome and relaxing summer!!! Hope to see you again in future classes, I just hope I made it out of this one. :)
Have a good one!!!!

Blogs?

Mrs. White,
When are our last two blogs due by? I also wanted you to know how much I have enjoyed your class very much. I have watched how you have taught our class and made mental notes of strategies to use. I hope I am even half as good at being able to get through to my students as you have been. Thank you for reinforcing for me that this profession is exactly what I want to be doing.

I just wanted to say thank you to Mrs. White...for letting us out of class early. This has been a very tiring week already!! Testing is going on in the schools and I work in the school system so guess what...I am a proctor for testing. For some reason it has absolutely wore me out. Getting out of class early was super!! I enjoyed the drive home and even got home before my husband and boys got home from church and got to surprise them. So, THANK YOU Mrs. White!!!!!!!! It was greatly appreciated!

FINAL

I liked test 3 because we were given some choice about what questions to answer. However, whether or not the final is the same format or not, I'll be fine. My concern is that I hope it will still be an untimed test. It is so much less streesful that way! I also love the idea of the test being posted early so people can go ahead and get it out of the way. I know for me my finals are all clumped up together.

Good luck to everybody on your finals!!!

Quick question...do we bring in a hard copy of the language analysis or do we submit it on-line? Should we do both? I don't remeber hearing anyone say.

Clauses

I just had a question about sectioning off the clauses. Do we have to section off the clauses for semantics and pragmatics, or is sectioning off the clauses limited to the analysis of form? I looked at the sheet for pragmatics and it said nothing about sectioning off clauses, but on the major components of conducting a language sample, under bullet E, it says to section off the clauses. Guess I'm just confused again. Thanks for the help in advance!

Final Exam

I'm trying to figure out when to have my family come to help me move out. Is the final exam online, or do we have night class? I'm assuming it's online, but it would be just my luck that I'm wrong. An answer from anyone would be appreciated! thanks

Semantics

I was just wondering where utterances like ummm, yea sure, sure and OK would go on the phase sheet. I'm not quite sure and any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, when a child says no to something that is considered to be rejection correct? Or does it have to be something in particular?

Pragmatics

I just had a quick question about my project. I have done the transcription and am to the part where I section off all turns. I am assuming this is refering to the turn-taking within the conversation, but am a little unsure of how I should section them off. Should I do this on the transcription and just number everytime the child takes a turn in the conversation? I understand what I'm looking for, I'm just not sure how to section it off. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

One Word Utterances

ok, so my project is all typed out and the utterances are numbered, and im on the step where you tell what kind of utterance it is (transitive, intransitive, or equative). I've got them all except for the one work utterances, what category do they go under? There are lots of times when the girl just said "Yes" or "WHOA!" Also, what do I call the utterances where she says, "And....And....And..." Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Tech Center

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed visiting the technology center last night. It really made me look at objects I use on a daily basis and think how they can be modified or simplified. Not only is this center a good resource while I'm in school doing projects and such, but it is also a place I will keep in mind to visit when I'm actually in the field of OT and helping children adapt to their environment! Thanks for sharing this resource center with us Mrs. White!

Language Project

I am finding it hard to choose which area I want to address in my project--pragmatics, semantics, etc. Would someone share with me what they based their choice on? I need to figure that out in order to move on to doing the analysis. Thanks in advance!

Daily Dozen

As the semester is winding down and you tend to become overwhelemed I encourage you to consider these dozen tips for each day...
  • Take one day at a time.
  • Pray
  • Eat right.
  • Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.
  • Talk less; listen more.
  • Separate worries from concerns . If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety . If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.
  • Find time to be alone, jot down thoughts and inspirations.
  • Spend time with someone you love
  • Laugh, find at least a few minutes to relax and have fun.
  • Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).
  • Go to bed on time and get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
  • Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before.

language analysis project

when counting utterances on our language analysis project if the child answers a  question or statement by saying "yeah", then pauses before saying their next sentence is that considered an utterance to be counted or should we include the "yeah" as part of the sentences

I know this may seem as a silly question but i wasn't positive and didn't want to number everything wrong then have to go back and change all my answers.

THANKS for the help!!

TEST

I just finished the test and feel as if some questions were much harder since we weren't able to talk and get in depth about certain parts of intellecutal disabilites as i would have liked. Other than that I hope ever one else isn't as loaded with projects and papers to be done with in the next few weeks as me. Summer is just around the corner YAY!!!!

CNN Specials on Autism

This week CNN will be running specials on Autism in light of Wednesday be
National Autism Awareness Day. Check out the EXTREMELY interesting links on CNN's website. Let me know what you think of the Naughty Auties virtual reality space!

CNN Specials on Autism

what was that called?

Does anyone remember what those word puzzles are called when you write a word vertically down a page and then write words or phrases vertically at each letter that start with the same letter as the vertical words? We made one for blindness a few weeks ago and I am trying to use the same idea for a lesson but cannot remember what the correct term is for them. I tried looking on the internet but did not have any luck. Let me know!

Totally Depends – Some More

  1. How do you keep from singling out the kid when offering assistance? - - - You can't, really.  But, good teachers provide assistance to ALL kids - just in different ways
  2. Have you ever ran into educators that will refuse to work with a deaf child? How do you handle that? - - - I can actually say in my career I NEVER did. Everyone of my colleagues WELCOMED my students and/or me into their classrooms. However, if it were to happen – it depends on the situation, the IEP, the teacher, the principal, etc. how it is handled. But, always very professionally and focusing on STUDENT'S BEST INTEREST
  3. I'm curious about how a signing and a hearing teacher's opinions different in the 2 different DHH schools. Which do they think is better. - - - You will get many different answers for this. Most of the time you will find teachers in Deaf Schools, residential programs, will most often support ASL. However, that is not always true. And that does not mean that OTHERS do NOT. It is impossible to make sweeping generalizations. Hopefully educators will realize the value of various methods of communicating and the role each play.

Your Questions – That Totally Depends on the Individual

You asked many excellent questions Wednesday night on the papers you submitted. Many of these however, simply cannot be answered with a statement or generalization because ALL children are different and all educators are different. It is impossible to say what "all girls like in clothes" and it is impossible to say what is best for all children who are deaf or who are hard of hearing. So, I have listed several questions that the answer is simply, "It truly depends on the individual student, the individual situation, or the individual educators."

  1. What do you think is the best method for learning for these children? – It is truly an INDIVIDUAL CHILD decision.
  2. In Deaf schools do children with cochlear implants get made fun of or looked down upon by Deaf children without them? – Can't generalize – it certainly does happen at times, but also happens in hearing schools, too. Some children who are Deaf WILL make fun, but many others will not. Totally depends on the child.
  3. "Does the deaf student like when the teacher uses differentiated instruction or like to be treated exactly like the others?" – It would depend on the child who is d/Deaf and it would depend on how the teacher is differentiating and implementing it. Very difficult to answer this question in general

observation

On Friday I went to the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center to do my observation and I really really enjoyed it. I encourage anyone who is a deaf ed major (I believe there are two others besides myself in our class), or maybe if you aren't but are interested in seeing this to go and observe there! It is a preschool with a variety of students who have cochlear implants, hearing aids and some who just need help with speech. It is all oral and no signing takes place and I have never seen that before. It was really eye opening and I really enjoyed observing there. The whole day they focus on the students developing speech and language so it goes great with this specific SED class as well!

Jena's the only one qualified to TRULY answer...

"Most of the time do deaf and hard of hearing individuals date other deaf individuals?"

Jena - WhattayaThink?

"Is it more difficult for deaf to learn math, especially in a setting where the teacher signs? In particular math such as algebra and calculus?"

Jena Answers This One

The student asks, "Any suggestions on how to include all students into learning to better communicate with a deaf student in a mainstream class?

Extra Credit Feedback - From Both Classes

Impressed. I am impressed by your candor and excellent suggestions. Here are a few I will be implementing:

1. Offer you one MORE question than you HAVE TO answer. This gives you an option in case there is one question that you really do NOT know or feel less confident in answering.

2. Be more intentional about stating the instructional objectives of each class and ensuring by the end of class we have met them. If students still have questions that there is an avenue to have those questions addressed.

3. Balance direct instruction and student activities to accomplish the instructional objectives.

4. Ensure that the questions on the test are worded clearly. (Remember ANY time a student is UNCLEAR about a test question you can call and get an explanation of what the question means) However, I will do a better job of writing specific questions.

5. Balance the points between all questions, not making any ONE question be worth such a large percentage of the overall score.

6. Continue with an open book, open note and untimed test.

7. Continue having it be the synthesis, evaluation and application of material as a professional teacher would apply information in a real world setting - not the regurgitation of information from the text and notes. You want college classes that actually are what you can USE in the real world.

8. The questions can demonstrate your own "opinion" or style but MUST reflect best practice or what the book and resources have demonstrated are effective and maximize student learning. Just because a question asks what YOU would do doesn't mean the answer is CORRECT if it does not include what brings about the greatest good or is the most appropriate measure in that given situation. Jena's teacher was 100% wrong in her opinion that Jena HAD TO TAKE NOTES because ALL kids take notes in that class. Not every practice is appropriate.

A few of the things it appears some or all of YOU will be doing...

1. Prepare more effectively - for tests.

2. Read the questions carefully to determine WHAT they are asking you to demonstrate you know.

3. Answer specifically the question that was ASKED not provide general information about that topic.

4. Put forth a bit more effort than you have been

Hmmmmm - who has a longer list!

Let's talk about Acclerated Reader.....

I feel like throughout my time in school I've given AR a pretty fair chance. AR started at my school when I was in 3rd grade, and since then it's grown like a weed that you just can't kill. I feel like the program (or maybe it's the people who implement the program) actually discourages lots of kids from reading at all. The books I wanted to read seemed to never be on the list, so instead of reading something I wanted to read for pleasure I was forced to read something I hated, which in turn made me not want to read at all! I'd really like to hear the other side of the story though....anybody out there who thought AR was useful to them? Anyone who has used it in a classroom and thinks it works well? Complainers like me, I'd love to hear your AR horror stories too! :-)

tonights class

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having a better week then me. For some reason, instead of having one car problem, I have had one after another in a very short time and will not be able to make it to class tonight. Over spring break I had to replace my alternator, battery, and water pump. Driving home from Cincinnati from spring break, my belt fell tore off on the high way and I had it towed the rest of the way home. I just got it in to replace the belt Monday, but the people fixing the belt broke the spring loaded arm that puts the belt on. SOOO that means I have another part to buy and wait for. I am going to be completely broke after this! Anyways, I work full time as a nanny and the ride I found home from work cannot get me until 8 p.m. which would put me back in Richmond right as class was finishing. So, can someone PLEASE post on this blog the important points from class, any pages for me to focus on in the book, and anything else that you think I should know? THANK YOU THANK YOU! Mrs. White, I am sending my extra credit with a friend. Hope that is okay. Have a good class tonight. It sounded really interesting!

Paper in hand

Tomorrow night you will turn in your 10 point extra credit papers to me as you come into class, before class starts. I won't be taking them up at all after this. I found the feedback on the papers from Monday night's students to be very candid and useful. I look forward to reading yours.
My mom emailed me this and I thought it was cute so I wanted to share it.

Blindness

I loved last wednesdays class...I guess it really hit home for me. I was legally blind until the age of 15. I had actually forgotten about some of the things they had in my IEP to make learning easier for me. One of the things was the teachers were supposed to use an overhead projector rather than the chalkboard. I had a teacher in fifth grade who day after day refused to use the overhead...and I vividly remember my assistant for the blind chewing her out...hmmmm I think my mom did too hehehe. Of course she had to comply but it took her a long time. To this day she is the worst teacher I've ever had. She didnt care if I could see the material or not she had been teaching that way for a long time and she didnt want to change it just for me.

Yea for me (and I do not mean to brag but I am really surprised)!!!! I got a good grade on test 2. I am so excited!!! I am finally getting it. At first I was not quite understanding all the concepts we were learning in class, but now I am beginning to feel comfortable with it. Congratulations to all of you who also performed well. Finally understanding and succeeding is what makes it all worth it!!!!!!

Test Taking Skills - YOUR Answers to Test 2

I have taken sample answers from various student papers that received 4/4 or 6/6 etc. on each question and put together this sheet which we will use to address Test Taking Skills as well as other skills listed on page 312.

Wednesday Night Class Agenda Change

Agenda for Wednesday Night class has changed.

I welcome/encourage blogging on any of these ideas to help prepare us for class:

1. Deafness - specifically:

  • how the degree of hearing loss impacts language development.
  • factors which impact speech and language development
  • factors to consider for appropriate educational placement
  • instructional strategies

2. Chapter 14 - Enhancing Language and Communication - we will begin with the list on page 312 and apply it to our own classroom and recent test taking experience

Classmates

Good evening! One of the most encouraging parts about teaching both of my classes is the warmth, encouragement and support you demonstrate for one another. There are several among you who are experience health issues, health issues of close family members, deaths in the family and SCHOOL WORK on top of all of that. I would ask that for those who are prayin' folk say a prayer for one another during this weekend when we celebrate. For others who choose to encourage and support peers in other ways I'd ask that you remember your classmates during these closing weeks of the semester. Offer extra smiles, encouraging words and help as you can.

I am appreciative of being a part of such a great group of students. We WILL complete this course SUCCESSFULLY - TOGETHER!

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed class tonight!! I am absolutely fascinated with the deaf community. Thanks to Jenna (hope I spelled it correctly) for coming into class and talking to us. I will be the first to admit that I take for granted all the wonderful things that the Lord has blessed me with. I love to listen to music and tonight on my way home, with my radio on, I thought about how it hard it would be if I couldn't listen to it...how my world would be effected if I lost my hearing or my sight. So I commend all of the people who carry on such successful lives with these issues (I do not want to say disabilites because I am almost sure that the deaf community does not consider themselves disabled and I do not either!).

OBSERVATIONS

Hey everyone!!

I dont know if anyone can help me out, but i cant remember if our observations had to be in strictly an all special ed. classroom or if it could be in a general ed. class that may have students with IEPS. If anyone could let me know that would be great!

Thanks,
Amanda

Ideas anyone?

While going over the project with Mrs. White on Sunday, we discussed some possible settings in which to record the language sample. I was wondering if anyone had actually taken the language sample yet, and if not what kind of setting do you plan to use? For instance, are YOU actually going to interact with the child, or are you going to record the child interacting with another child? I can't really decide what course to take so I was hoping for some feedback/ideas. Thanks and I hope that everyone had a great spring break!

Spring Break

Hope everyone had a great Spring Break... I just can not believe that it is already over!!! I didn't get to go any where for Spring Break because I will be gone from March 29-April 6 to Florida.. I guess you could call it a late spring break... You are going to laugh, but we actually have tickets to Wrestlemania, so I have to miss my NASCAR race in Martinsville.. :( But, I'm looking forward to going mainly because we are goin to Disney World one of the days and then down to the Keys...
Anyways, hope everyone is having a great week so far and hope to see everyone tomorrow in class.. :)

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Hello All! This evening Mrs. White met myself and Melissa at O'Charley's for a "make up" class about the language analysis. Where were the rest of you who needed to be there (lol)?? I just wanted to say that I am very excited about this project!! I cannot wait to get into the classroom and observe and record the child that I have chosen for my project! Hopefully from this, any questions or doubts that I have about what we have learned will be answered. Good luck to everyone with this project!!!!

questions about the observation/interview

Mrs. White,
I was wondering who I can interview and observed in the classroom at the Madison County distant. I was thinking about doing the project with a lady that I work with at Hastings. She teaches at Kingston for LBD. Is that OK? If not can you help me find someone around here?

-Carolyn

questions about the article

So I was wondering do we have to choose what type of paragraph that we're going to write or do you have to both types of paragraphs for the article?

SPRING BREAK

Hey Everyone!!!

I hope everyone is having an amazing break already.  I woke up this morning and walked out side and the snow was past my knees. Whoever lives in Cincinnati I hope you are enjoying the snow as much as I am, but I hope it stops soon cause I have a flight leaving at 7 am tomorrow for a cruise so we cant miss the flight. I just thought I would say hi and let everyone know about this crazy snow going on here. A crazy little fact is that ten years ago to March 7 there was a blizard that started in Cincinnati just like yesterday.

Well everyone be careful and stay warm!

Observation

Do we have a form that we need to have the teacher sign to verify that we did our observation time? I hope everyone has a restful spring break!

Article - Reading Response

If you were NOT in class tonight your article - reading response IS STILL DUE in two weeks, March 19th. I would suggest you contact a classmate and make a copy of the article. It does not scan well in order for me to transmit it (email) electronically.

Questions about the project!

I was wondering what type of activities we can use for the project. I know that we need to document the child's natural language. I was going to do this project when I go home over Spring Break, so is it ok if I have to have my 4 yr old nephew color in a coloring book that I know he would like, so he can exchange the movie and why he likes the movie. Or do you want me to just ask him how was his day. I am really close to him and he always uses his natural language with me when I call home. Should we have more than one activity so we can make sure we have more than an 100 utterances.

Language Project: Age of child

So, I am really confused as to how old the kids have to be. Could I do a middle school aged boy who has autism?

Language Project: Script

On our script do we need to include small actions that's being done like a real play script or do just want the conversation like the example you give us? For example do we need to mention that the child is playing witha toy or just strictly stick to what's being said?

Assignment Decision?

During class last night Mrs. White ask us to think about when we wanted to do the article response, so I thought this would be a good place to start the discussion. I personally do not want homework over spring break but I also do not want to try to get this finished the same week we have a test so I guess its a toss up. I am not a procrastinator so I think I would like to get the assignment next week in class and then hopefully try to get it finished before spring break starts. Anyone else?

Language Analysis Project Make-Up Help Session

I am willing to do a Make Up session and go over each section of the project for ANY ONE who is interested - IF THERE IS AN INTEREST. I'll do this for ONE student or ten. Numbers do not matter. One is important.

Because of my full time work load the only time I could do it would be a Thursday evening or a weekend (most likely a Sunday afternoon). However, depending on IF and WHO responds I'll make the decision at that time.

If you are interested in attending a "How to Do/Conduct & Analyze My Language Project" you may comment here or email me.

reminder!

Today during class, Michaela and I realized that since we live in Ohio, we have to do our observations over spring break because they are mandatory in your home town. If you live to far to drive home like we do, you might want to get that scheduled over break. Just thought I'd remind you:)

Winter Wonderland--NOT

Hey guys! Just wanted you all in Richmond to see what you are missing south of there! LOL--
This is what it looks at my house at 5:00 p.m this afternoon, but this has been the scene from most of the day....I guess we have about 4 inches now at 7:00pm and it is STILL snowing!! They cancelled classes at the Corbin campus, and I don't think they have done that in the past couple of years. I know it's beautiful but it's getting annoying....spring can't be too far away can it? I hope that everyone drives safely and stays warm!

ONE TOPIC?????????????????

What happened to the idea of ONE post about the SAME TOPIC and folks posting comments to THAT ONE post. It is difficult to make comments to everyone's posts and keep up with them. If it's about weather or tonight's class we should have ONE POST and all other submissions should be comments within that.

SORRY to sound cranky but it is tough to keep up when I am trying to answer everyone!

Weather

Hi everyone! I was wondering also what the weather was like in Richmond its still snowing pretty heavy right now in London.

Worried About Reading Response and Missed Information

Mrs. White,
For those of us who commute and are unable to attend class tonight for fear of nasty road conditions after dark, will you post the reading response and instructions online? I think a few of us are worried about that, and really don't know if we should take the risk to drive tonight or not, so would you let us know?

weather/illness

I'm not sure about the weather either... I also have bronchitius and wasn't sure about coming to class, but we have a test this week, and I believe she's handing out our articles for that reading response??? So... I too may or may not see you all tonight, but good luck to all, and drive carefully.

Weather

It is still snowing here in Corbin, we have about 2 inches on the ground as of now. How is the weather in Richmond?

Weather

I was wondering how the weather is in Richmond? It's snowing pretty hard here in London. It's sticking to the grass but not to the roads yet.
I went to the doctor this morning and I have pneumonia. I am stuck in my house for the rest of the week (which is better than being hospitalized which was the alternative), so I can't come to class tomorrow night. Will someone please take good notes and share with me. I am so worried about missing tomorrow because I am afraid that I will miss something major. If someone will help me with what I miss, then I will owe you a favor in return. Thanks a Million!!!

feedback on test

I have checked and maybe I am just doing something wrong...but i can't seem to be able to find the comments or feedback on my test...I guess I'll just keep trying.

feedback

I really appreciated the feedback too, it's nice to know what we did wrong and need to improve on. Besides the fact that it locked me out once, I liked the online test pretty well!

CLASS ON WED>

Class was fun on wednesday night. I enjoyed creating our own activities out of the books which really helped me understand what syntax and pragmatics really where and how to use them in the classroom. It was also very interesting to read through a child's writing and be able to notice what may need to be focused on with this child and what we can give positive feedback with. I just wanted to say I look forward for class every week because Mrs. White can help use learn in a fun way that really helps me understand the true meaning not just the definition. Can't wait for this weeks class to see what we will be doing next!

Reader Response?

What date is the reader response due?

Feedback

I like the idea of feedback on the online tests as well, it lets us know what you expect on the next tests.

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Thank You!

Mrs. White I just wanted to say thank you for giving feedback on the test. I know it must take a lot more time to grade when you are giving feedback to everyone’s test. I personally benefit greatly from knowing what I got wrong. Thank You so much for your feedback.

readers response?

hey...so i was looking at another blog post and i have to say i know that the reader response thing isn't due this upcoming week...but can anyone tell me what it is and how it's done?

Blog post per month

How many of these blog post do we need each month? I think only 4 a month, but I could be wrong?

Catching Up

I wasn't able to attend class on Wednesday night because I have been sick with the flu, so could you guys catch me up? What did you discuss and what did you learn in the group project/discussion? Thanks, and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Establishing & Maintaining the Topic

It is good to see the various ideas that are being shared on the blog. As we are now used to logging on and posting to the blog it is time to take our online communication "to the next level." How can we create a place that fosters more effective communication, interaction and discussion of ideas in one place on the blog?

Pragmatics - how we USE language effectively is one of the components of language we are addressing throughout this semester. Online pragmatics are different than face to face. Establishing and maintaining the topic on a BLOG is a bit different than face to face.

One of the skills that would promote having ONE conversation about ONE topic is to post all comments about a topic in ONE place. This means prior to creating a NEW post please scroll through the recent posts and see what has been posted recently. Often times the idea or topic you are getting ready to post regarding is ALREADY in a another place with a current THREAD of discussion. Please post to THAT discussion MAINTAINING THAT TOPIC in that one location. Before you create a new post think about your idea and see if/how it might fit into another topic that has been submitted in the past week or so. If no posts/discussions on THAT TOPIC have already been started then "establish a new topic/create a new post."

You receive points for posts or comments that you contribute to the blog.
I have chatted online before our Wednesday night class and experiences were about the same from our online class to my others. I didn't really have a different attitude towards our online chatting or IM experiences than the online class I thought that all the ones I have done has been hard to follow and keep up with what everyone is saying. I think this is because so many people are trying to talk at once and there really isn't much turn taking going on, so its a bit overwhelming.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Wow!!! Nine questions turned out to be a little tougher than I expected. I am so glad to have the first test over! I will also be glad to be back in class tomorrow night (or tonight I should say). Granted is was nice to just have to log off last week and be right there at home watching tv by 9, but I had a hard time keeping up with all the typing back and forth on line. I guess I could adjust after a time of doing it, but I won't complain about coming to class either.

Online Chatting

How many of you have chatted online before our Wednesday night class? How were those experiences DIFFERENT from our online class? Did/do you have a different attitude towards your online chatting or IM experiences than the online class? Why do you think this is?

wed. reading response

Hello all,
I was wondering about if we have a reading response due tmw. in class?? If so, what is it, how do we respond and such??? hmm.. thanks!

Monday, February 18, 2008

I am so glad to have this first test completed. It is such a relief.

Class online....

I really enjoyed the online class the other night. Even though it was slightly difficult to keep up with what everyone was saying, I felt like it was a good break from the ordinary. I especially liked how Mrs. White connected our confusion to that of a child who may be deaf or have a learning disability and how they must feel everyday in the regular education classroom. This will definately be an experience that I hope to keep in mind when I become an educator.

EMAIL

This may be a silly question, but is anyone else having problems getting what Mrs. White sent us through email to open? Especially the Test taking skills and the Wednesday night class log thing? What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!

All at once

In class it seems we are more reserved to when we ask a question, there is "Turn Taking" in the classroom. In the online class room that was hard to do, when it was on our mind we said it right then. Once it calmed down, I think it was a good experiance, even though I couldn't get Java to work for me.

Online Learning - Dynamics of Communication

How did the dynamics of communication differ in our online class from when we meet face to face? What was different? Were they features of semantics, syntax or pragmatics?

Online Class - Frustration of Online Learning

THANK YOU very much for your participation in the online class tonight. I know there were advantages and disadvantages to having class online. I would like to have a discussion here about a couple of aspects. I would like to continue the discussion we started about the FRUSTRATION many of you may have felt trying to learn in an online environment and parallel that to how YOUR FUTURE students may feel. How can you use the experience tonight to help you be a better teacher?

Language Development

If you want to view the videos we watched in class and discuss any of them you can view them at http://www.stuff2view.blogspot.com
I want to say a big thank you to Mrs. White for not having us meet on campus tonight. I for one am greatful that I will not be driving in this weather. I am somewhat nervous about logging onto the online class, but am confident I will figure it out. Thanks again, Mrs. White!!

Class on ICY, SNOWY February 13th

I realize the university is only on a 2 hour delay which means that we COULD have class this evening. I understand that many professors have cancelled classes for the day. I also know that many of you drive to class at night, when it is dark. After class the roads could become worse as the temperatures begin to drop again.

I hate to cancel class since we had to miss two weeks ago. Yet, nothing is worth putting your lives at risk. Sooooooo...I am going to dismiss FACE TO FACE class on campus at EKU. HOWEVER, I am going to be online in Blackboard conducting class and preparing folks for the test that WILL STILL BE THIS WEEK.

I will send an email with the directions for how to log on. I will be online at 6:00 ready to chat, answer questions, etc. I encourage you if online chatting via Blackboard or classes are new to you to go ahead and log in at 6:00 our normal class time to get used to it. Class will begin at 6:30.

Feel free to post questions here on the blog about this.

Class Wednesday

I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what language acquistion is and how it can be applied to the classroom? I am really unsure about that and tried to figure it out from the book but I am still just a little unsure.

Models

I just wanted to go over the models to make sure that I am on the right track. Piaget said cognition comes first and then language. Chomsky was the opposite, he said language comes first and then cognition. Vygotsky stated language and cognition were interdependant. Pinker believed the opposite the they were completely independant of each other. Skinner said "we learn from what we see" and that we need to experience things to understand them. If I am completely off base please someone fill me in to what I did wrong or if you have another way of explaining it better let me know. Thanks for your help!

P.S.- I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I really enjoy this class! I am completely engaged from start to finish and I can definitely not say that about most of my other classes.

Just to Clear Things Up

I was wondering how many students in this class have an issue that we will be covering this semester. I myself am dyslexic and have other learning disorders. I am a Special Education Deaf and Hard of Hearing major with a minor in American Sign Language Studies and a minor in Women's Studies. I was just wondering if anyone else was of a similar background. I saw a few people did already post similar thoughts.

Thursday, January 31, 2008

It took me a while to figure out how to leave a post, but here's what you do...up in the right hand corner (where the dark blue is) you should see your email address. Next to that is "New Post". Just click on that and it will take you to a page where you can type and leave your own post. After you are done typing make sure to click on the orange, "publish post" button. You can then click on the view blog button (also in the blue, but on the left side) and it will take you back to the original blog, where all of the other blogs are at. Hope this helps!!!

Intro

I'm Lei Stratton, and apparently I just figured out how to do this blog thing. I've never done anything like this before but I think I'm going to like it. I'm a P-12 special ed LBD major, with emphasis in elementary aged students. I was legally blind until the age of 15, and I think that's what most drives me toward this career. I really think I'm going to enjoy this class, as I have already found the lessons intriguing.

Just realized I never introduced myself

Hey! My name is Keisha Webb. I become a senior this semester and I am majoring in Learning and Behavior Disorders. I can't wait to be a teacher. I think that it's a very rewarding job even though it can be a difficult one. I love working with children and watching them learn and grow. At the moment, I actually work with children every day of the week. Monday-Friday I work for an afterschool program. On the weekends I volunteer for two different programs through my church. One is a basketball league and I was a referee for the firt time this week. It was an interesting experience. Outside of that, I love music. I'm always listening to music, singing (badly), or have a song stuck in my head. I also love photography. Pictures capture a moment in time; almost like a frozen memory. Pictures have been really important to me lately because I lost an uncle last month, and having pictures help me to deal with the grief. Well, I guess that's enough rambling about myself. Have a good night!
Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get textbooks in from USB? I have had my textbook for this class ordered for 3 weeks now and it still hasn't come in. Any suggestions?!

teaching a 1st grade lesson.. breaking down words

I'm in methods right now and I'm teaching my 1st lesson next week. The teacher gave me the broad points to cover, and it seems as thoguh I'm doing something very similar to our class last week. Given 2 larger compound words (one letter per card pushed together to form these words) the students one by one will see how many words they can make with those letters. I was surprised to be doing it in a 1st grade class, but that's "higher level thinking" I suppose!?!?

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Several people have posted on the blog that I left about my son being made to look up defitions and telling the teacher that his mom's teacher said that was wrong. I too, remember being made to take the dicitonary and look up the defitions of words. I have always felt that it was beneficial to me!! I feel like this is a good way to learn the meaning of words, because some words have more than one and I feel that this is a better way to just all around understand what the word means. Though, I do feel that just looking up the defition is not the only way to teach children the meaning of the word, it is a good way, but involve some fun activities such as playing a word game. There are many websites that offer neat games and activities to helpl with spelling and defitions (http://www.spellingcity.com/).

Weds - 1/30 - Class Cancelled

I hope everyone read their email and will not make an extra drive to Richmond for class tomorrow. My foot/ankle still hurts a great deal. Being on it all day and all night tomorrow night would be way too much. No way I could walk from the parking lot to class.

I am reminded of how incredibly blessed I am. My mom drove down from Indiana today to help with several errands and things I needed to do. When we saw the condition of the jeep I realized how blessed I was that I wasn't hurt any worse. The impact was on the driver's front corner. I just keep counting my blessings although there are a ton of details and LITERAL headaches to come.

I've actually noticed sore spots on my head today that I didn't feel last night. I'm sure it's from where I either hit the window or the rear view mirror with my head. Not to fear, you know how hard my head is!!

I'll miss you all tomorrow. See you next week!

Mrs. White

feel better mrs. white!

mrs. white, so sorry to hear about your recent accident. i hope your healing goes as well as can be expected...we will see you hopefully in class next weekend. feel better!

Monday, January 28, 2008

I really enjoyed the lesson last Wednesday night!! My son also wanted everyone to know that he enjoyed class too. He enjoyed it so much that he said he wanted to start coming with me every Wednesday, but he goes to Awana's (a church program) when school is in session so he decided that he would just come sometimes. Also, Mrs. White had mentioned something about the fact that teachers should not just give children words and a dictionary and tell them to look up the defition, and it just so happened that this morning his teacher gave them a list of ten words and told them to look them up. He was quick to let his teacher know that his mommy's teacher at college said that she should not do that (I am not sure how she took it). Thanks to all for tolerating him last week!!!

Phonology

I know this might sound like a stupid question, but I understood the fact that Phonology is the smallest unit of sound, however I'm confused what part of the word is the phonology. For example if we have the words lay say ray pay would the phonology be l, s, r, and p or would it be ay since ay is the same each time wouldn't that be the smallest unit of sound or would it be the first letter since it makes each word different. I don't know if i just made sense or not but i was kinda confused when i looked back at my notes reviewing.
If anyone could help me out that would be great.

THANKS
amanda

Saturday, January 26, 2008

I really enjoyed the lesson on Wed about phonemes and morphemes. I feel like I really understand it. I was supposed to learn it last semester in anthropology, but no one understood it. Going over it again just made it really clear. That was a good way to teach it Mrs. White.

Semantics Vs. Pragmatics

I have read over the material in chapter 2 that covers semantics and pragmatics. However, I am still a bit confused about the difference(s) between the two. I understand the book's definitions but I don't think I could explain to someone else the difference, nor would I probably be able to distinguish between the two on a test--and that could be bad! =]
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how to make the distinction? Sometimes it helps to have another's perspective.

interesting facts

I have been to one class and unfortunately had to miss the second class but these posts have given me a great place to start catching up on my work thanks to all of you who left helpful tidbits.

Class last night

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me why we need to know about phonemes if we are teaching special ed. I remember talking about that in class however I do not know exactly what she said.

second week's posting...

I found last night's class to be very helpful. I have studied and extinguished finding both morphemes and phonemes in several language assessments during previous semesters. However, the activity, reading and last night's lesson really helped me distinguish between the two. I used to have to refer back to text and other information to remind myself what each word actually meant. I am now aware and have a clear understanding of what both words mean and what finding or listing them in tells.
I was also surprised when the international phonemic alphabet was used in class. I see how it ties in, but find the letters and representations somewhat confusing at times. I used to have it memorized, but looks like it was stored in my short term memory. ha ha.
All and all I feel that class is going great and with only two class meetings behind me I find all that is covered in class helpful and a great refresher and reinforcer from previous semesters.

missed class

Hey everyone! I missed class on Wednesday....would someone mind telling me what they thought the most important aspects of the discussion were? I'd really appreciate the help! Thanks!

blog test.....

I found class last Wednesday evening to be very interesting and seemed to be a great review for me. The first chapter seemed to give a good background of information to be covered as the semester progresses. I felt that any and all questions were answered and I know from experience that Mrs. White has high expectations for her students and I hope to meet those expectations to the best of my ability.

Hey!

Hey everyone! My name is Emily Blomquist and I am a freshman here, and I live in Case Hall. I love it here so far and I am an Elementary Education with Deaf and Hard of Hearing major. I was really excited to hear that you , Mrs. White, have experience in this field! I am really excited for this class!

Hello!?

Ok, I hope I have finally figured this blog out! I never knew I was this bad with computers, but trying to figure out how to post on the blog has proven to be pretty difficult for me!! I am a senior occupational science/occupational therapy major and just recently declared a minor in special education. I decided on a minor in special ed. because I think it will make me a more knowledgeable and well-rounded OT, when I eventually graduate with my masters which will be in approx. three more years. Eventually, I want to work with children with autism and currently volunteer with Central Kentucky Riding for Hope as well as Cincinnati Children's Hospital OT department. So far, I have enjoyed the special education classes I am taking this semester, which also include behavior disorders and behavior management. They are by far more interesting than most of the occupational science and anatomy classes we have! I am looking forward to this spring semester and am excited to gain a better understanding of education's views and perspectives on development!

Hey! :)

Hey Everyone! My name is Heather Rector and I am a junior at EKU. I just recently changed my major from communication disorders to an Elementary Ed. and Special Ed. major. I am from Frankfort but just got my first apartment in Richmond this past year. I wanted to first start off saying that this is my first time using the blogs in a class but I think I am going to like it. I think it is a great way to communicate with you Mrs. White and for us to better get to know our classmates. I am looking forward to the semester! :)

Phoneme Game

I played the phoneme game that Mrs. White posted. The first time I did it, it was fun and easy for me. Then I played it from a child's perspective and that changed things. It wasn't easy anymore. I can imagine how difficult it would be for a child, especially a child with a learning disablitliy. The vowel phonemes sound so similar, it would be difficult to figure out which one to use where. How confusing!

I agree with Leslie about chapter 2 in the text being confusing. I am glad that Mrs. White commented that she would clear things up! =] I am beginning to see how important language development is in education, and I am sure it will become even more clear further into the class.

Confused!

I just finished reading chapter two for this weeks class and let me tell you I am completely confused! All these phone and ology words plus the rules, my head is absolutely spinning. I hope class Wed. will clear all of this up! I did like the part in chapter one that talks about animals understanding language. I think they do to a certain extent because when I talk to my poodle she will respond to certain things I say. Although, I also believe that some of their behavior is learned too because they get positive reinforcement and/or treats when they have completed an ask for task. Just something to think about. See you in class Wed.

Hello!

Hello! My name is Michaela Anderson and I am a freshmen here at EKU. I love it! I have been working with children with special needs ever since I can remember. My mom is a special education teacher, in Beavercreek, Ohio where I am from. So, I have been going in to her class room and helping her all through out my life. I also have worked at camps and baby sat for many children with special needs. I love working with them and helping them learn. I loved class last Wednesday I found it very interesting and can't wait for next week !

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Hi EVERYONE!!!!

Hi class my name is Amanda Biehl. I'm from Cincinnati and just recently moved to a house with land because I own four horses that I love dearly. I am a Sophomore Elementary Ed. and Special Ed. major. I have always wanted to be a teacher and make an impact of the life of my students. Once I graduate with a Degree from EKU I plan on moving back to Cincinnati to find a teaching job as well as receiving my masters in Cincinnati. I am looking forward to this class very much, I feel like I have already learned a lot from the first day. I only hope some day I will be that great teacher that everyone looks up to. I hope everyone learned a little about me and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone as well throughout this semester.

Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Ashley Gregory. I am a LBD k-12 (emphasis is elementary) major. I commute from London on Monday and Wednesdays. I'm excited about this class because it seems like it's going to be a lot of hands on and group interaction activities. I learn better this way. I'll see you all Wednesday.

First Class

I enjoyed the first day of class. I'm glad we are going to not do the break thing, I'd rather just get out a little bit earlier. I look forward to seeing everyone next Wednesday!
Claire
Hello! My name is Kaitlin (Katie) Jones and I am a freshmen here at EKU. My major is LBD and I'm getting my degree in elementary ed P-5. Also, my minor is ASL. I am from Beavercreek, Ohio and that is where I would like to go back and work once I graduate. When I was in high school, I was in an anti-drug program where we would go to the elementary schools and teach them all the negative effects of drugs and alcohol. All the material had to be altered and presented in an interesting way that the children could understand. I did this multiple times a year, and it was always great helping them learn. I know this is what started my wanting to become a teacher; it was such an amazing experience. See you all next Wednesday!

hello class!

Hi class! Hope everyone had a good first week of classes. My name is Abbey Love and I am sophomore here at EKU studying elementary education and special education with a DHH specilization. My greatest passions are working with children and playing sports. I have been doing both all my life. I play soccer for EKU women's club team and ran track for the University of Louisville last year. I have been babysitting since I was twelve and currently use nannying as my complete source of income. I love it! I began working with special needs children after my family adopted a little boy from South Korea who had minor special needs. I found out I had the patience and passion needed for the job and fell in love with helping these children succeed. I look forward to this class (except for it being a night class!). Have a great weekend!

Inspired

After our first class, I found the debate we had about whether communication is learned or innate very interesting! We touched on that topic in SED 104, but we had to learn who was responsible for each theory, not which one we agreed with. I hadn't really thought about it until Wednesday. I look forward to going into that topic more in depth.

On another note, I have worked with both types of teachers that Mrs. White discussed. My children have also had both types of teachers, so I completely understood what she meant. I certainly want to be the type of teacher that cares whether or not my students LEARN and I hope to be the type of teacher who is willing to change my ways of instruction in order to make sure that happens. Has anyone heard of Ron Clark? He is known as "America's Educator". There was a movie made about him also. He was a guest speaker for a professional development seminar I attended a couple of years back. He has started his own school "The Ron Clark Academy". The website is: http://www.ronclarkacademy.com/ Everyone who aspires to be an educator should read his story. He will inspire you beyond belief. He did me. I wanted to share that with you guys. Hope everyone has a great 3 day weekend!

In General

My name is Craig Owens I am 23 years old, I commute from Corbin, Ky. (about 60 + or - miles) where I work for the Corbin school system in the family resource program with children who have behavior issues. I also coach high school football, hunt too much (deer, rabbit and quail), ride my customized VTX 1800cc, and go to school full time. I also guide on the kentucky Elk hunts, I have been on 8 sucessful hunts 1 unsucessful ( he was a horrible shot) thus far in two years of guiding and calling in elk for other people. I have not been lucky enough to get drawn for the state lottery elk tag yet, but guiding is just as fun. In the spring and summer I shoot competitive archery all over the south eastern united states and Texas, where I have earned semi-pro status and I am sponsored by the Bow Tech archery company. I had to get my girl friend of 5 years in to bow hunting and bike riding so I could spend some time with her, because she is a full time student as well. My major is Special Education (middle grade) LBD and EBD. My old man tells me I have too many irons in the fire but I dont' think so.

Hello all! My name is Jessica Townsend. I am currently working on a degree in special education, LBD p-12 and regular classroom p-5. I chose to go into special education because I currently work in the school system in Powell County and I have worked with and observed children in the Learning and Behavior area and I have a passion to work with these children. I have a love for working with children in general and my life long dream is to become teacher, so that is what I am going to do!! A little info. outside of all of this...I am 29 years old. I am married and I have two wonderful boys (Gary is 9 and Jacob is 3). My children are my life. When I am not at school (night class), I am always doing something with them. My nine year old plays baseball, football, and basketball, so we are always running to practice or games. My three year old loves to watch his brother and says that he is going to be just like him. Sometime that is a good thing and sometimes...well maybe not so good (just kidding). I love to come home from class at night because they are always so glad to see me!! My husband is super! He takes on the role of "mom" when I have class. He cooks, cleans, does homework, and yes, even bathes the boys while I am out pursing my dream. I could not ask for a better family. One of these days I will walk across the stage to receive my degree in education and all the late nights, time away, and homework will be worth it and I will have my dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Class tonight

I really enjoyed our class meeting tonight. I was surprised at how much I learned and also how much I already knew. I am very excited to learn so much more during the rest of this semester. I also liked how Mrs. White held my attention and kept me interrested on the subject through out the entire class.

Hello!

Hi everyone, my name is Heather Witt and I am a Sophmore pursuing a degree in LBD to teach middle school kids with an emphasis in social studies. I have had experience in the classroom through observations, mentoring and working with my mother who is also a special education teacher. I also work with the 21st Cetnury Program, which is an after school and summer prgram that allows children a safe place to hang out with friends and get help with their studies, at the High School I graduated from. This is my second special education class and I am looking forward to it.

Hi!! :)

Hi everyone!!! My name is Angela and I am currently pursuing a degree in LBD P-5. The only experience I have in the classroom is from observations from other classes. This will be my second SED class and I am so excited to get the semester rolling. To be honest I never really wanted to be a teacher, but then my dad talked me into taking a few classes. After doing a few observations and seeing how much of a difference teachers make in their students lives made me realize that I wanted to make a difference in some childs life, especially for those that most people think there is no hope for because they need a little extra attention and time in teaching them what they need to know to pursue their dreams in life and to show them that even though they have a disability doesn't mean they can not be successful.
I hope we have alot of fun this semester and see everyone Wednesday.

Hello

Hello, My name is Diane and I am a Special Education LBD major. While in High School I worked at a local Elementary School in their Special Ed classroom and with a few individual students in a regular classroom setting. I am very excited to further my education through Special Education classes so that one day I can have my own set of students. I look forward to meeting everyone in class next week.

Hi! :)

Hi everybody! My name is Claire and I'm and LBD/English and Communications 5-9 major. I'm a traditional student and don't have any experience in the school system yet, but I have a brother with autism which was a major influence on my decision to major in Special Ed. I'm looking forward to the start of a new semester!

Intro

Hello fellow classmates my name is Leslie and I am majoring in LBD. I have currently worked for the school system for 12 years as a paraeducator in Special Ed. and have decided to go back to school to earn my degree in teaching. Working with these children is the most rewarding thing that I have ever experienced, besides my own children. I can not imagine ever doing anything else. I am looking forward to an exciting class!

Introduction

Hello everyone! I am Melissa and I am a Junior majoring in Special Ed/LBD P-5. I worked in the school system for several years as a teacher's aide in Special Education. Although I have years of experience in this field, I was never educated about the disabilities of the children I worked with. I am looking foward to exploring these areas so that as a teacher, working with children with special needs, I will not only understand the difficulties these children face in their education, but be able to help them as well. I think this course will be extremely beneficial and I am looking forward to learning!

Let's Get Started!

To get started with the blog you may wish to post an introduction of yourself here on the blog. You may already have some questions about the class, something in the syllabus, assignments, etc. This is an excellent place to post those. You could also post beginning thoughts about this course and what you anticipate you will be learning over the next 15 weeks.Feel free to respond to one another! I will be responding, too.Mrs. White
