Questions about the project!

I was wondering what type of activities we can use for the project. I know that we need to document the child's natural language. I was going to do this project when I go home over Spring Break, so is it ok if I have to have my 4 yr old nephew color in a coloring book that I know he would like, so he can exchange the movie and why he likes the movie. Or do you want me to just ask him how was his day. I am really close to him and he always uses his natural language with me when I call home. Should we have more than one activity so we can make sure we have more than an 100 utterances.

Language Project: Age of child

So, I am really confused as to how old the kids have to be. Could I do a middle school aged boy who has autism?

Language Project: Script

On our script do we need to include small actions that's being done like a real play script or do just want the conversation like the example you give us? For example do we need to mention that the child is playing witha toy or just strictly stick to what's being said?

Assignment Decision?

During class last night Mrs. White ask us to think about when we wanted to do the article response, so I thought this would be a good place to start the discussion. I personally do not want homework over spring break but I also do not want to try to get this finished the same week we have a test so I guess its a toss up. I am not a procrastinator so I think I would like to get the assignment next week in class and then hopefully try to get it finished before spring break starts. Anyone else?

Language Analysis Project Make-Up Help Session

I am willing to do a Make Up session and go over each section of the project for ANY ONE who is interested - IF THERE IS AN INTEREST. I'll do this for ONE student or ten. Numbers do not matter. One is important.

Because of my full time work load the only time I could do it would be a Thursday evening or a weekend (most likely a Sunday afternoon). However, depending on IF and WHO responds I'll make the decision at that time.

If you are interested in attending a "How to Do/Conduct & Analyze My Language Project" you may comment here or email me.

reminder!

Today during class, Michaela and I realized that since we live in Ohio, we have to do our observations over spring break because they are mandatory in your home town. If you live to far to drive home like we do, you might want to get that scheduled over break. Just thought I'd remind you:)

Winter Wonderland--NOT

Hey guys! Just wanted you all in Richmond to see what you are missing south of there! LOL--
This is what it looks at my house at 5:00 p.m this afternoon, but this has been the scene from most of the day....I guess we have about 4 inches now at 7:00pm and it is STILL snowing!! They cancelled classes at the Corbin campus, and I don't think they have done that in the past couple of years. I know it's beautiful but it's getting annoying....spring can't be too far away can it? I hope that everyone drives safely and stays warm!

ONE TOPIC?????????????????

What happened to the idea of ONE post about the SAME TOPIC and folks posting comments to THAT ONE post. It is difficult to make comments to everyone's posts and keep up with them. If it's about weather or tonight's class we should have ONE POST and all other submissions should be comments within that.

SORRY to sound cranky but it is tough to keep up when I am trying to answer everyone!

Weather

Hi everyone! I was wondering also what the weather was like in Richmond its still snowing pretty heavy right now in London.

Worried About Reading Response and Missed Information

Mrs. White,
For those of us who commute and are unable to attend class tonight for fear of nasty road conditions after dark, will you post the reading response and instructions online? I think a few of us are worried about that, and really don't know if we should take the risk to drive tonight or not, so would you let us know?

weather/illness

I'm not sure about the weather either... I also have bronchitius and wasn't sure about coming to class, but we have a test this week, and I believe she's handing out our articles for that reading response??? So... I too may or may not see you all tonight, but good luck to all, and drive carefully.

Weather

It is still snowing here in Corbin, we have about 2 inches on the ground as of now. How is the weather in Richmond?

Weather

I was wondering how the weather is in Richmond? It's snowing pretty hard here in London. It's sticking to the grass but not to the roads yet.
I went to the doctor this morning and I have pneumonia. I am stuck in my house for the rest of the week (which is better than being hospitalized which was the alternative), so I can't come to class tomorrow night. Will someone please take good notes and share with me. I am so worried about missing tomorrow because I am afraid that I will miss something major. If someone will help me with what I miss, then I will owe you a favor in return. Thanks a Million!!!

feedback on test

I have checked and maybe I am just doing something wrong...but i can't seem to be able to find the comments or feedback on my test...I guess I'll just keep trying.

feedback

I really appreciated the feedback too, it's nice to know what we did wrong and need to improve on. Besides the fact that it locked me out once, I liked the online test pretty well!

CLASS ON WED>

Class was fun on wednesday night. I enjoyed creating our own activities out of the books which really helped me understand what syntax and pragmatics really where and how to use them in the classroom. It was also very interesting to read through a child's writing and be able to notice what may need to be focused on with this child and what we can give positive feedback with. I just wanted to say I look forward for class every week because Mrs. White can help use learn in a fun way that really helps me understand the true meaning not just the definition. Can't wait for this weeks class to see what we will be doing next!

Reader Response?

What date is the reader response due?

Feedback

I like the idea of feedback on the online tests as well, it lets us know what you expect on the next tests.

Thank You!

Mrs. White I just wanted to say thank you for giving feedback on the test. I know it must take a lot more time to grade when you are giving feedback to everyone’s test. I personally benefit greatly from knowing what I got wrong. Thank You so much for your feedback.

readers response?

hey...so i was looking at another blog post and i have to say i know that the reader response thing isn't due this upcoming week...but can anyone tell me what it is and how it's done?

Blog post per month

How many of these blog post do we need each month? I think only 4 a month, but I could be wrong?

Catching Up

I wasn't able to attend class on Wednesday night because I have been sick with the flu, so could you guys catch me up? What did you discuss and what did you learn in the group project/discussion? Thanks, and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Establishing & Maintaining the Topic

It is good to see the various ideas that are being shared on the blog. As we are now used to logging on and posting to the blog it is time to take our online communication "to the next level." How can we create a place that fosters more effective communication, interaction and discussion of ideas in one place on the blog?

Pragmatics - how we USE language effectively is one of the components of language we are addressing throughout this semester. Online pragmatics are different than face to face. Establishing and maintaining the topic on a BLOG is a bit different than face to face.

One of the skills that would promote having ONE conversation about ONE topic is to post all comments about a topic in ONE place. This means prior to creating a NEW post please scroll through the recent posts and see what has been posted recently. Often times the idea or topic you are getting ready to post regarding is ALREADY in a another place with a current THREAD of discussion. Please post to THAT discussion MAINTAINING THAT TOPIC in that one location. Before you create a new post think about your idea and see if/how it might fit into another topic that has been submitted in the past week or so. If no posts/discussions on THAT TOPIC have already been started then "establish a new topic/create a new post."

You receive points for posts or comments that you contribute to the blog.
I have chatted online before our Wednesday night class and experiences were about the same from our online class to my others. I didn't really have a different attitude towards our online chatting or IM experiences than the online class I thought that all the ones I have done has been hard to follow and keep up with what everyone is saying. I think this is because so many people are trying to talk at once and there really isn't much turn taking going on, so its a bit overwhelming.

Wow!!! Nine questions turned out to be a little tougher than I expected. I am so glad to have the first test over! I will also be glad to be back in class tomorrow night (or tonight I should say). Granted is was nice to just have to log off last week and be right there at home watching tv by 9, but I had a hard time keeping up with all the typing back and forth on line. I guess I could adjust after a time of doing it, but I won't complain about coming to class either.

Online Chatting

How many of you have chatted online before our Wednesday night class? How were those experiences DIFFERENT from our online class? Did/do you have a different attitude towards your online chatting or IM experiences than the online class? Why do you think this is?

wed. reading response

Hello all,
I was wondering about if we have a reading response due tmw. in class?? If so, what is it, how do we respond and such??? hmm.. thanks!

Monday, February 18, 2008

I am so glad to have this first test completed. It is such a relief.

Class online....

I really enjoyed the online class the other night. Even though it was slightly difficult to keep up with what everyone was saying, I felt like it was a good break from the ordinary. I especially liked how Mrs. White connected our confusion to that of a child who may be deaf or have a learning disability and how they must feel everyday in the regular education classroom. This will definately be an experience that I hope to keep in mind when I become an educator.

EMAIL

This may be a silly question, but is anyone else having problems getting what Mrs. White sent us through email to open? Especially the Test taking skills and the Wednesday night class log thing? What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!

All at once

In class it seems we are more reserved to when we ask a question, there is "Turn Taking" in the classroom. In the online class room that was hard to do, when it was on our mind we said it right then. Once it calmed down, I think it was a good experiance, even though I couldn't get Java to work for me.

Online Learning - Dynamics of Communication

How did the dynamics of communication differ in our online class from when we meet face to face? What was different? Were they features of semantics, syntax or pragmatics?

Online Class - Frustration of Online Learning

THANK YOU very much for your participation in the online class tonight. I know there were advantages and disadvantages to having class online. I would like to have a discussion here about a couple of aspects. I would like to continue the discussion we started about the FRUSTRATION many of you may have felt trying to learn in an online environment and parallel that to how YOUR FUTURE students may feel. How can you use the experience tonight to help you be a better teacher?

Language Development

If you want to view the videos we watched in class and discuss any of them you can view them at http://www.stuff2view.blogspot.com
I want to say a big thank you to Mrs. White for not having us meet on campus tonight. I for one am greatful that I will not be driving in this weather. I am somewhat nervous about logging onto the online class, but am confident I will figure it out. Thanks again, Mrs. White!!

Class on ICY, SNOWY February 13th

I realize the university is only on a 2 hour delay which means that we COULD have class this evening. I understand that many professors have cancelled classes for the day. I also know that many of you drive to class at night, when it is dark. After class the roads could become worse as the temperatures begin to drop again.

I hate to cancel class since we had to miss two weeks ago. Yet, nothing is worth putting your lives at risk. Sooooooo...I am going to dismiss FACE TO FACE class on campus at EKU. HOWEVER, I am going to be online in Blackboard conducting class and preparing folks for the test that WILL STILL BE THIS WEEK.

I will send an email with the directions for how to log on. I will be online at 6:00 ready to chat, answer questions, etc. I encourage you if online chatting via Blackboard or classes are new to you to go ahead and log in at 6:00 our normal class time to get used to it. Class will begin at 6:30.

Feel free to post questions here on the blog about this.

Class Wednesday

I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what language acquistion is and how it can be applied to the classroom? I am really unsure about that and tried to figure it out from the book but I am still just a little unsure.

Models

I just wanted to go over the models to make sure that I am on the right track. Piaget said cognition comes first and then language. Chomsky was the opposite, he said language comes first and then cognition. Vygotsky stated language and cognition were interdependant. Pinker believed the opposite the they were completely independant of each other. Skinner said "we learn from what we see" and that we need to experience things to understand them. If I am completely off base please someone fill me in to what I did wrong or if you have another way of explaining it better let me know. Thanks for your help!

P.S.- I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I really enjoy this class! I am completely engaged from start to finish and I can definitely not say that about most of my other classes.

Just to Clear Things Up

I was wondering how many students in this class have an issue that we will be covering this semester. I myself am dyslexic and have other learning disorders. I am a Special Education Deaf and Hard of Hearing major with a minor in American Sign Language Studies and a minor in Women's Studies. I was just wondering if anyone else was of a similar background. I saw a few people did already post similar thoughts.
