I'm suprised that there isn't something like this already. Well, there probably is, this one is just more advanced than the old chatrooms. For those of you who didn't read it, "naughty auties" is a virtual reality space where people with autism can communicate and socialize in a more comfortable way. I think that a person with autism would have a much easier time talking on their computer in their own room, rather than in a public place surrounded by people they don't know. The article said something about how chatting with people can help enhance thier socializing skills. I think it will to a point, but there are somethings that can't be learned through a computer. Even if they get to be totally comfortable online, they are still going to have a lot of trouble with real life situations if they don't have those on a regular basis as well. I think this program is a good way for people with autism to communicate with each other, I just don't think it can replace real life communication.

so, i was also suprised by the title, "naughty auties." I didn't see an explanation in the article, and it's just a weird name. It implies that 'naughty' things are going on in the chatroom, but I didn't get that impression from reading the article. I don't get the title.

I think its a good idea but I was told that autistic children didn't want to communicate or be social. I dont believe that however, I think they just seem to be trapped inside their own minds...almost like they want to communicate and be social but cant because something is blocking them.

Wanted to add.....I watched this show on discovery health about this autist boy that they were putting through some new programs to see if it would help him and at the end this boy was about 12 years old and talking to an interviewer. He described how this new therapy brought him out of this foggy bubble....and before this the boy wouldnt even hug his parents but he described that he didnt really feel anything towards them but now he likes them a lot....i noticed he never said he loved them that was sad. Anyway it was a really interesting program.

The kid that I had this past summer in the summer program was severely autistic, his father had alot of these specials done over the years that would try to explain things a little better. He had used them, and passed them on to me.

I viewed a program on CNN about Autism about a week ago or so. It was called "finding Amanda". I think about a young girl with autism and how she has dealt with it over the course of her life. She communicated via her computer which she typed on and the computer spoke the words. It was amazing how smart she was and the profound things she had to say. The stresses of living with this disorder were great, but she seemed to be coping as well as possible. It also talked of her love for animals, especially cats. I know in class the question was raised about if people with this disorder were loving towards animals and we were not sure. According to this young lady, without her cat she would be lost. She also had a dog which she introduced on the program. It was great, very informative and I feel it will also help raise awareness. I have a cousin with the disorder and I know that it is hard to deal with at times, but as a family we all pull together and have a hand in helping him lead a normal life and strive to help and teach him new things.
