Questions about the project!

I was wondering what type of activities we can use for the project. I know that we need to document the child's natural language. I was going to do this project when I go home over Spring Break, so is it ok if I have to have my 4 yr old nephew color in a coloring book that I know he would like, so he can exchange the movie and why he likes the movie. Or do you want me to just ask him how was his day. I am really close to him and he always uses his natural language with me when I call home. Should we have more than one activity so we can make sure we have more than an 100 utterances.

I think it is an EXCELLENT idea to do an activity and video tape it NOW to see how it goes or what happens. It will be INTERESTING to see how this works for you. I would have several "tricks/activities" in your bag. Many, actually I would say MOST students are just CONFIDENT that their niece/nephew/child they babysit will just sit and have natural conversation with them. This is most often NOT the case. It ends of being more of an interview with questions and answers.

Key to gaining a sample of a child's NATURAL language is considering what type of activities does the child engage in during a normal day. Can you create those in a natural way and videotape the child - either with or without you involved. Video or audio tape that.

Make sense?
