Online Chatting

How many of you have chatted online before our Wednesday night class? How were those experiences DIFFERENT from our online class? Did/do you have a different attitude towards your online chatting or IM experiences than the online class? Why do you think this is?

I have a different attitude towards the online class than IM'ing my close friends because there are different ways of communicating with different groups of people. When talking to my close friends on MySpace IM, for example, I don't really worry about syntax or semantics of grammar. We kind of have a shared code of our own, I guess you could say. In the online class, on the other hand, people were a little more reserved and more conscious of their tone, meaning, and so on. This is a prime example of code switch. Right?

I had chatted online before. But nothing for educational purposes...lol..It was different because when you are chatting with your friends it is no biggie if you mess up or say something off base. However, when you are talking to your teacher and classmates i find myself slightly more reluctant to speak up. Also when i would chat online it is usually a one on one conversation, never one on twenty something...all and all it was a good experience i think, nice to know there is an alternative to meeting on campus. I just hope all my instructors don't find this well kept little black board secret out...lol! just kidding!!! good class, good class!! see you later tonight!!

The differnce is not that big but the sentence structure does change and it is a bit more relaxed when you are talking with friends then when you are in class. the class is still more relaxed for me though cause i am more comfortable at my own pc then in a classroom.

This was very different from any on line class that i had done before, I did not like it. I dont feel that we got too much accomplished by doing things this way what you you think? do you think it helped us prepare for the test? Next time i think that we should find another way to do things what you you think?

I like to IM my friends online, but I have never been in a chat room before with more than 4 people. That online class was a whole new experience for me because instead of only keeping up with myself and four friends, it was myself and the entire class. I do feel a different attitude for online chatting. In the regular classroom, people can answer you with short little answers and it is fine, but with the chat room, everytime people tried to say yes or i understand, it took a long time. It made me not want to talk as much because i didn't want to add to the confusion. Don't get me wrong, I still think it is really cool that it is possible to do that on line. I liked it, it was just confusing sometimes.

I agree it was hard to keep up with at times.
