Language and communication is at the heart of society. Learning how to use language to communicate wants and have needs met can be a complex task for many children. Our course will explore how language develops and the intricate challenges many children face who experience a variety of physical, emotional and cognitive difficulties.

we went over...chapter 6 that includes...what is consider language. Language involves 1. pragmatics, 2. syntax, and 3. sematics. Also, we talked about what is a grammactic morphemes, which is words that end with ing. For the rest of the class we got into small groups to discuss what lesson plans we would create with sematics and syntax. Alao, we did discuss metalinguistic ability that is when the child goes beyond language use and to think about language. For example, we a child reads a book and they think about the story more. Finally, the last thing we did was look at some of her son's work...which I thought was the best part of the class, because it allows you to following understand sematiics. I hope this helps!
Carolyn, thanks so much for the summary. I want to point out that the FOCUS of looking at the writing samples was SYNTAX. We specifically were looking at GRAMMAR AND STRUCTURE so this is looking at syntax. We used the grammatical morpheme sheet to help guide our work to determine what structures he did demonstrate command of (had mastered) and which areas he still needed to focus or additional work. These SKILLS are syntax.
When we were discussing activities such as VOCABULARY, metaphors or figurative language in the activities with the BOOKS we were discussing SEMANTICS.
This is the BEST PART OF THE BLOG!!! It is WONDERFUL for everyone to share their reflections from class, have ideas tweaked and be able to refine their understanding.
Thanks again for commenting on this post!!!
