Several people have posted on the blog that I left about my son being made to look up defitions and telling the teacher that his mom's teacher said that was wrong. I too, remember being made to take the dicitonary and look up the defitions of words. I have always felt that it was beneficial to me!! I feel like this is a good way to learn the meaning of words, because some words have more than one and I feel that this is a better way to just all around understand what the word means. Though, I do feel that just looking up the defition is not the only way to teach children the meaning of the word, it is a good way, but involve some fun activities such as playing a word game. There are many websites that offer neat games and activities to helpl with spelling and defitions (http://www.spellingcity.com/).

I know this might be a dumb question, but I have no idea how to post a blog...I cant' find it anywhere on the homepage! So do you know where I can look? Also, I do remember when I was in grade school my teacher's would make everyone look up in the words in a dictionary and I feel that I really didn't understand those terms and I can't recall any of those terms now. So I think it's great that teacher can find aways a have their students learn terms with asking the other students.
I had to look up words in a dictionary when I was in school. I also recently observed a 3rd grade classroom that a friend of mine was teaching and she had her whole lesson based off of teaching children how to use a dictionary. The difference is that when you are in elementary school, they make dictionaries focusing on that age level. I think that learning to use a dictionary is an extremely beneficial tool for schooling down the road. I see where at first using a dictionary may confuse some children, yet I feel that they need to learn the skill and see if they are able to pick up the concept.
I don't think that is a dumb question either, because I can't figure out how to post an original post either.
I think looking up definitions can work for some kids but definitely not all. It's not exactly a good way to make it fun or keep the attention of the child. My personal experience with this method led to boredom and I would just temporarily memorize the definitions for a quiz and then I'd forget.
I remeber being made to look up amy definitions through the years, they always seem to be the speling words. We also had to write the word at least 20 times and if you missed them on the test then you had to write them again 20 to 50 times depending on the teacher. Some students learn this way, but when it used as a form of punishment the are we not doing the exact opposite? The child will learn to dispise writing and especially spelling list.
