hello class!

Hi class! Hope everyone had a good first week of classes. My name is Abbey Love and I am sophomore here at EKU studying elementary education and special education with a DHH specilization. My greatest passions are working with children and playing sports. I have been doing both all my life. I play soccer for EKU women's club team and ran track for the University of Louisville last year. I have been babysitting since I was twelve and currently use nannying as my complete source of income. I love it! I began working with special needs children after my family adopted a little boy from South Korea who had minor special needs. I found out I had the patience and passion needed for the job and fell in love with helping these children succeed. I look forward to this class (except for it being a night class!). Have a great weekend!

I think there are great parallels that can be drawn between the sports arena and teaching. Have you ever thought about the similarities between athletes in a game or a meet and students in a class or grade of school?

I agree 100%! I can think of numerous parallels between sports and the classroom. The first one that comes to mind is that children in both settings need motivation and a reason to do what you are asking (whether it is to score a goal or take a math test). They need to see that what they are doing is important. It is sometimes easier to get that motivation to athletes because sports are seen as an extra curricular fun activity, but it essential to get that motivation in the classroom as well. Learning is important! Learning is essential! Learning can be fun! Another parallel would be that children in both settings need encouragement and guidance to continue succeeding. That's where teachers and coaches come in. We are essential in our team or classes success.

I am looking forward to mixing sports in my classroom. There is a lot that students can learn from sports: teamwork, confidance, encouragement, leadership, sportsmanship - I believe that teaching these skills on the field can help the classroom environment as well.
