I really enjoyed the lesson last Wednesday night!! My son also wanted everyone to know that he enjoyed class too. He enjoyed it so much that he said he wanted to start coming with me every Wednesday, but he goes to Awana's (a church program) when school is in session so he decided that he would just come sometimes. Also, Mrs. White had mentioned something about the fact that teachers should not just give children words and a dictionary and tell them to look up the defition, and it just so happened that this morning his teacher gave them a list of ten words and told them to look them up. He was quick to let his teacher know that his mommy's teacher at college said that she should not do that (I am not sure how she took it). Thanks to all for tolerating him last week!!!

I wasn't in class last week, but I'm sure your son was great. In my Earth Science for Teachers class we had a mom bring in one of her children when school was cancelled, and he totally showed us up! He knew more about the subject we were studying that day than we did! It's always fun to have kids visit.

I'm interested in some more techniques to learn... or better for me to teach deffinitions and spelling. I was taught to sound it out, and that hasn't done me very well for over 17 years.

I actually remember being in grade school and having to look up and write definitions and that was how we learned vocabulary. I also spent much of my time in highschool on probation, which meant I had detention everyday after school until the end of the year ( I was educated in a very strict, private, same-sex school and the nuns found my socks being too low problematic). I have written more definitions from a dictionary than anyone would ever care to know, but I do feel like I have a pretty extensive vocabulary because of it. I scored high on both the ACT and GRE in the vocabulary sections. I do not think this is the best way to teach vocabulary and it is by far not the most exciting way, but I think it just goes to show us that everyone has different learning styles and techniques. It worked for me, but I still wear low cut socks.

I can remember in middle school having to write definitions out of the science book if we were talking when we weren't supose to. That's one reason that I don't enjoy science very much because to me sciance should be hands on, not copying letters from a book. Learning to write letters is for headstart and kindergarten.

I was in your group during the activities, and I enjoyed having your son there. It was interesting to see some of his reactions to the word activities and such.

Yeah I agree with the whole not having anyone just look up definitions in a dictionary. I am taking BIO 102, and its for teachers. I really love how my professor teaches us, because he never gives us what we should do or think straight up. We first have to ponder and think about what we are supposed to do before he tells us if we are right are wrong. I think it's a great teaching technique.

I think it is cool that some parents bring their kids to class with them. Its fun to watch how they respond to the things we do in class. I'm sure your son felt good being able to passing out papers and picking papers up for Mrs. White. He is a cutie and is well behaved. I enjoyed having him with us in class and hope to see more of him.
I can remember having to look up the definitions of words in Science class and I didn't really mind it sometimes. At the time the words we were looking up were interesting and I wanted to know what they were.

I hope your son enjoyed being in class. He is about the same age as my daughter, who I'm sure would think it "cool" to go to night class.

I work in an afterschool program and sometimes I work with the homework kids. The older kids have definitions every week. One kid told me that he types his words into Microsoft Word or dictionary.com so he doesn't have to look the words up. Wish I could have done that when I was in elementary school. : )
